The portfolio experienced significant recovery in April, with net assets increasing by more than $100,000 compared to the previous month, driven by a broad market recovery and strong earnings reported by several portfolio companies. Year-to-date time-weighted performance was -0.1%, compared to the S&P 500’s 5.5% return. Over the past 3 years, the portfolio returned 91.8% cumulatively, compared with 77.4% for the S&P 500.
The rapid recovery in April serves as yet another warning to investors of the dangers of trying to time the market. Major market indices surged after news of ceasefire negotiations became public on April 8, an outcome nobody could have predicted in advance. Missing out on this rebound would have had a significant negative impact on performance of any portfolios.
This market behavior continues to reinforce my investment approach, which focuses solely on the operating performance of my portfolio companies, and making investment decisions based on reported earnings rather than short-term movements in stock prices.
